Are you a cat lover? On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you rate you love and dedication for your beloved cats? Wherever yours is, Peter Cohen’s is off-the-scale. And to a non-cat lover like me (sorry eczema, allergies), he’s admirably crazy!
Being a professional house builder and designer in Santa Barbara, California, means that Peter is naturally interested structures, scale, scope, colour and designs buildings for a living. When he bought a new home, it came with two feral cats living in the yard. So he decided to try to befriend them. As you do. But not simply by feeding them, giving them tidbits or stroking their bellies. No. By enticing them indoors, turning his house into the ultimate Cat World that no cat could ever refuse or want to walk away from!
Cohen spent over $40,000 building an inside cat domain with tunnels, bridges, swirly slides and back scratchers and hidden cubbyholes. There are specially designed cupboards with exhaust fans which keep the cat litter-boxes smelling as fresh as a cat litter-box can smell. He has also installed five Roomba robot vacuum cleaners which are constantly moving, sucking up the cat hairs across the house.
In his office, the cats have a rope-wrapped pole and a spiral walkway. Cohen says on the video documentary,“I thought maybe the cats would just look at it, but they use it all,” Cohen says. “It’s like a freeway sometimes with them all over the place.
Suffice it to say, the cats adore the house and him. And now, after one of his beloved cats got sick, he decided the house was definitely big enough for more than one… so he began rescuing them from a cat shelter and today he has well over a dozen indoor cats roaming around and sharing his wonderful space.
