If you want to increase your home’s value AND lower energy costs, the best thing to do is install energy efficient insulation!
Here’s what you need to know:
It’s worth it — Install energy-efficient insulation, and you can save up to $2,500 per year! Insulation is fairly cheap, but it will reduce your energy usage and thus lower your utility bills. Not only will this help you to reduce costs, but it will increase the value of your home should you try to resell it.
Check the attic — One of the most common places to find leaks in your insulation will be in your attic. If you rarely use the space, it may become neglected and run down. Seeing as the heat from your heating system rises, any leaks in the attic will allow the heat to escape. Your heating system will have to run twice as hard to keep your house warm. Install new energy-efficient insulation in your attic, and you’ll cut energy costs.
Look everywhere — You’d be amazed at all of the places where you can find leaks in your insulation:
- In the basement
- Around the exterior doors and windows
- Around the light switches and electrical sockets
- In the recessed lights
- Around the trapdoor leading up to the attic
- Any place where wires and ducts lead outside the house
All of these places are weak spots, so it’s vital that you look at all of these things to ensure that the insulation is up to snuff.
Not sure if the insulation is leaking? It’s worth calling in a general contractor to take a look at your home’s insulation to give you a damage report. He may find that there are no problems in your insulation, and you won’t have to spend a cent!
